In 2008 Wassu Gambia Kafo developed the first clinical study that has taken place in The Gambia on the consequences of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) on the health of women and girls. The results reveal that FGM is still practiced in all six regions of the country and causes injuries to 1 in 3 women and girls. Later in 2010, a second clinical study is carried out with the aim of obtaining detailed information on the long-term consequences of the practice in The Gambia, including its impact during childbirth and on the health of the newborn. . The study shows that women who have undergone FGM and their newborns are four times more likely to suffer complications during childbirth than those who do not undergo FGM.
