We have respectfully presented the results of our clinical studies on the consequences of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) to the Supreme Islamic Council in The Gambia and to Imams and Ulema in West Africa. At the International Conference in Nouakchott (Mauritania) in September 2011, “Islam and FGM”, organized by United Nations agencies and the German Agency for Development Cooperation (GIZ), the promulgation of a Fatwa (resolution) was achieved that recognizes that FGM is a harmful traditional practice, as well as the commitment of various Islamic authorities to prevent it.
